Lab and Assistive Technology
| |
Our state-of-the-art computer lab contains cutting edge assistive technology
along with a robust computer science driven corp of computer systems. Java is
the foundation language and is deployed across each main lab machine. The lab
is supplemented by other machines such as SGI and Linux boxes as the class needs
arise.
In addition to the regular technology, we are proud to offer cutting edge assistive
technologies. In cooperation with the Winona State University CS department,
and with a grant from the National Science Foundation, we have developed JavaSpeak,
a development platform that speaks to the user. We also use braille devices
such as a braille printer and input devices to further enhance our technology.

Below is a partial list of the assistive technology that we use:
|
|
Tiger Embosser
This printer prints not only Braille text but is designed to print graphics
in Braille. These capabilities provide a gateway to teaching abstract
math and computer science to the visually impaired which would otherwise
be very problematic. |
 |
The Alva Braille Display
This display provides extended Braille input/output to a computer. It
incorporates screen translations and navigation aids that a standard keyboard
alone cannot provide. |
 |
Jaws For Windows
For direct, audio screen reading we use Jaws for Windows. This powerful
and robust software provides screen reading capability to not only the
visually impaired but can also help with those who have difficulty reading. |
