    CS 230 - Building a Custom Machine

Our CS 230 “Hardware and Basic Networking” class is taught in a hands on environment where the students dissemble, reassemble, and configure actual working PCs. Coupled with a lecture piece that covers the relationships between the various hardware pieces the students gain comprehensive knowledge of what makes up the internals of a PC. This class has been highly successful and the students all walk away with valuable skills.

Recently, the Hardware class, under the direction of Professor Chris Johnson, undertook the challenge of planning, and building a custom PC from components. Their “Dream Machine" would then be raffled off to the person who could guess the number of gummy worms in a large container. In addition to building the PC the students also had to schedule and work the raffle booth.

Below is a photo journal of the construction of the prize machine. The students broke into groups with each group handling a different part of the build. One group dealt with the motherboard assembly, power supply installation, drive installation, motherboard installation, accessory installation and finally, software installation. Quite self-sufficient at this point, the students only sought minor help from the instructor.

CS 230 is taught once each academic year.

The following link is a multimedia presentation about the Hardware and Basic Networking class.
